If an older Fanatec CSL DD or Gran Turismo DD Pro still uses QR1, replacing its shaft with the QR2 Base-Side (Type-C) is only half of the upgrade. Your steering wheel also needs a compatible QR2 wheel-side. This guide lays out the full parts check, the installation sequence and the point at which buying a new QR2-equipped wheelbase may make more sense.

First identify which base you own
Fanatec lists the Type-C shaft for CSL DD and Gran Turismo DD Pro wheelbases. It is the conversion part for earlier examples equipped with QR1. A current CSL DD QR2 wheelbase already comes with a QR2-family base-side, so inspect your physical unit before ordering a second shaft. Podium DD1 and DD2 use the QR2 Base-Side (Type-M) instead. Fanatec says it does not offer a QR2 upgrade accessory for older belt-driven bases.
Do not rely on the product family name alone. Check the quick release actually fitted to the front of the base and the connector style shown in the official documentation. A pre-equipped QR2 base needs the right wheel-side, not another Type-C conversion kit. If your hardware history is unclear, compare photographs of your own shaft against Fanatec's QR1-to-QR2 planning guide before checkout.

Count every steering wheel in the system
QR1 and QR2 do not mechanically mate. After replacing the base-side, each steering wheel you intend to use needs a QR2-compatible wheel-side. The standard QR2 Wheel-Side is the obvious companion to check; the QR2 Pro Wheel-Side is another compatible option. Fanatec also lists QR2 Lite wheel-side compatibility with the Type-C base-side, but choose it only after checking the wheel and torque restrictions that apply to your specific combination.
Fanatec states that wheels with a removable QR1 can be converted, while older wheels with a fixed QR1 cannot. That makes a wheel inventory worth doing before you start. Write down each wheel model, its present quick release, and whether the wheel-side is removable. Convert the wheel you use most first; there is no need to change every wheel on the same day if you can live without the others temporarily.

What changes on the track?
Fanatec describes a tapered mechanical connection intended to produce a secure fit and allow rapid wheel changes. The Type-C part uses aluminium construction and an improved clamp ring. The maker also says wheels can be hot-swapped without restarting the base or simulator, once both sides are correctly fitted. Those are design and workflow benefits; do not interpret the upgrade as a higher motor-torque rating for the existing wheelbase.
Fanatec's September 2026 upgrade guidance notes that CSL DD and GT DD Pro gained FullForce support via firmware in June 2026. It suggests QR2 can transmit finer effects more effectively than QR1. Actual feel still depends on firmware, title support, game settings, wheel and mounting rigidity. Update one variable at a time so you can tell what changed.

Install the Type-C upgrade carefully
- Shut down and disconnect. Turn the wheelbase off, remove the power connection and detach the wheel. Give yourself space to work squarely in front of the shaft.
- Document the starting position. Photograph the existing clamp, shaft and connector orientation. Keep all removed parts together in case you need to reverse the conversion or identify a fastener.
- Remove the old shaft. Follow Fanatec's Type-C quick start guide for the clamp sequence. Avoid pulling or twisting against the internal connector and do not substitute a guessed tightening torque.
- Seat the new shaft. Check the connector alignment and insert the QR2 Base-Side fully as the maker shows. Fit the supplied clamp ring and bolts using the official sequence and specified tightening guidance.
- Fit the wheel-side. Install the correct QR2 wheel-side on a convertible wheel with its approved hardware. Never force a QR1 wheel onto the newly fitted QR2 base-side.
- Test at low load. Confirm that the release locks and the wheel is recognised before driving. Start with a conservative force-feedback setting, inspect for abnormal movement, then increase to your normal profile.
The kit listed by Fanatec includes the Type-C base-side, clamp ring with bolts, a 5 mm Allen key and a quick guide. Use that guide for the exact installation procedure. If the connector does not line up or the clamp cannot seat evenly, stop and recheck the model rather than applying force.

Buy the upgrade or move to a newer base?
For a healthy older CSL DD or GT DD Pro that already suits your preferred torque, the Type-C conversion is a focused way to modernise the quick release. Add the price of one wheel-side for each wheel you will keep. If you are also planning a major force-feedback upgrade, compare the total conversion cost with a current QR2-equipped base instead. Fanatec's own planning guide raises this trade-off; your choice depends on the wheels you own and how much performance headroom you want.
For a multi-wheel collection, do the maths per wheel. One shaft plus three wheel-sides is a different purchase from one shaft plus a single favourite rim. Also check actual stock of each wheel-side before stripping the old system: a base converted to QR2 is of little use if your only wheel remains QR1.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Type-C kit include a wheel-side?
No. Fanatec's box list names the base-side, clamp ring, bolts, Allen key and quick guide. Order a suitable wheel-side separately.
Can I use QR1 and QR2 wheels interchangeably after conversion?
No. Once the base-side is QR2, the wheel needs a QR2-family wheel-side. Convert each wheel you intend to use.
Is Type-C correct for a Podium DD1 or DD2?
No. Fanatec specifies Type-M for those older Podium direct-drive bases. Verify the exact base model before ordering.
Does QR2 add force-feedback torque?
No. The motor's torque specification does not change. The upgrade changes the mechanical wheel connection and wheel-swapping workflow.
Recommended buying check: Verify your base model, inspect its current shaft, count convertible wheels, then pair the QR2 Base-Side (Type-C) with the appropriate QR2 Wheel-Side for your first wheel. Product and installation source: Fanatec.
